Free GPA Calculator & Cumulative CGPA Calculator — Semester Grade Average Online
Our free GPA calculator and cumulative CGPA calculator lets students calculate their semester grade point average, update their cumulative GPA across multiple semesters, and find out what GPA they need in upcoming courses to reach a target CGPA — all in one tool. Whether you are a high school student on a weighted 5.0 scale, a US college student on the standard 4.0 scale, or an international student working with percentage grades, this grade average calculator handles all three grading systems with accurate weighted calculations.
How to Calculate GPA — The Formula Explained
Your GPA is calculated using a credit-weighted average called the quality point system. For each course, multiply the grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0) by the course's credit hours to get quality points. Add all quality points across all courses and divide by the total credit hours. For example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course gives 12 quality points. A B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course gives 13.2 quality points. Total quality points = 25.2, total credits = 7, GPA = 25.2 ÷ 7 = 3.60. This is what makes GPA a grade weight calculator — courses with more credits have proportionally more impact on your GPA than lower-credit electives.
Cumulative GPA Calculator by Semester
Your cumulative GPA (CGPA) is your overall grade average across all semesters combined — the number that appears on your official transcript and determines honor roll, scholarship eligibility, and academic standing. To calculate your updated CGPA after a new semester, the formula combines your previous quality points (previous CGPA × previous total credits) with your new semester's quality points, then divides by the new total credit count. Our cumulative GPA calculator by semester does this automatically — enter your current CGPA and completed credits, add this semester's courses, and get your updated CGPA instantly.
GPA Goal Calculator — What Grade Do I Need?
The GPA Goal Calculator answers the question every student asks before finals: "What GPA do I need this semester to raise my cumulative GPA to [target]?" Enter your current CGPA, total credits completed, target CGPA, and next semester's credit load — the calculator shows the exact GPA required. Note that raising a low CGPA requires significantly higher semester GPAs the more credits you have completed. For example, a student with 60 credits and a 2.8 CGPA trying to reach a 3.0 needs a 3.6 GPA in a 15-credit semester — this tool makes that math instant and accurate.
Average Grade Calculator — What Is a Good GPA?
- 4.0 (A / A+) — Perfect GPA. Summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa eligibility.
- 3.7–3.99 (A-) — Excellent. Dean's List at most universities. Top medical and law school competitive range.
- 3.5–3.69 — Very good. Magna cum laude at most institutions. Competitive for most graduate programs.
- 3.0–3.49 (B) — Good. Cum laude range. Meets minimum requirements for most graduate programs and scholarships.
- 2.5–2.99 — Average. Meets most institutional academic standing requirements.
- 2.0 (C) — Minimum GPA for academic good standing at most US universities.
- Below 2.0 — Academic probation risk. Most universities require remedial action.
Semester Grade Calculator — Supports 4.0, 5.0 & Percentage Scales
This semester grade calculator supports three grading scales. The standard 4.0 scale is used by most US colleges and universities. The weighted 5.0 scale is used by many high schools for AP, IB, and honors courses, where an A in an honors class counts as 5.0 instead of 4.0. The percentage scale (0-100) is used in Canada, many European and Asian universities, and international programs. Select your scale from the dropdown before entering courses — the grade options update automatically to match your selected system.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points. Add all quality points and divide by total credit hours. Example: A(4.0)×3cr = 12 + B+(3.3)×4cr = 13.2 → Total 25.2 ÷ 7 credits = 3.60 GPA.
What is the difference between GPA and cumulative GPA (CGPA)?
GPA is your average for one semester. CGPA is your overall average across all semesters combined — what appears on your transcript for scholarships, graduate school, and honors eligibility.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA by semester?
Use the Cumulative GPA tab. Enter your current CGPA and completed credits, add this semester's courses, and click Calculate. The tool combines previous quality points with new ones and divides by the new total credit count.
What GPA do I need to raise my CGPA to a target?
Use the GPA Goal tab. Enter your current CGPA, credits completed, target CGPA, and next semester's credit load — the calculator shows the exact semester GPA required to reach your goal.
What is a good GPA in college?
3.5–4.0 is excellent (Dean's List, summa cum laude). 3.0–3.49 is good (cum laude, most graduate programs). 2.0 is the minimum for academic good standing at most US universities.
What is a grade weight calculator?
A grade weight calculator applies credit hour weighting when calculating GPA — courses with more credits have more impact. A 4-credit science lab affects your GPA more than a 1-credit elective. This calculator applies credit weighting automatically.
About This Tool
This GPA Calculator was built by the FreeImageTools team — students and educators who calculate GPA manually and needed a faster, more complete browser tool. The original calculator only computed semester GPA with a fixed 4.0 scale. We rebuilt it with three tabs: Semester GPA (dynamic course rows, grade scale selector, class standing label, quality points breakdown, copy results), Cumulative CGPA Calculator (enter previous CGPA + credits, add current semester, get updated CGPA), and GPA Goal Calculator (what GPA do I need next semester to hit my target?). We added support for 4.0, 5.0, and percentage grading scales, course-level breakdown in results, delete buttons for individual courses, and class standing labels (Excellent / Good Standing / At Risk). All calculations run in your browser — no data stored. Reviewed in June 2026.
